A rare ophthalmic disorder characterized by origin from peripheral nerves or neuroendocrine cells, and variable clinical features, depending on the type of tumor. The most common benign tumors are plexiform neurofibroma associated with von Recklinghausen disease, solitary neurofibroma, and schwannoma. Malignant tumors are less frequent and include malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor and Merkel cell tumor.
