Eurasian Association of Medical Geneticists Was Established

The declaration on the creation of the Eurasian Association of medical geneticists (EAMG) was signed within the framework of the First Eurasian Forum «The Commonwealth Without Borders» which took place at the sites in Almaty and Moscow on October 27-28, 2022.

The declaration was signed by:

  • Sergey Kutsev, President of the Association of medical geneticists of the Russian Federation, Director of the Research Centre for Medical Genetics, chief external expert in medical genetics of the Ministry of Healthcare of the Russian Federation, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences
  • Gulnara Svyatova, professor, Chairman of the Association of medical geneticists of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Head of the Republican Medical Genetic Consultation «Scientific Centre for Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Perinatology»
  • Tamara Sarkisyan, professor, President of the Armenian Association of medical geneticists, Director of the Centre for Medical Genetics and Primary Health Protection, Head of the medical genetics department at Yerevan State Medical University

The main purpose of the creation of the Eurasian Association of Medical Geneticists will be the development of international research, scientific practical and educational projects with the participation of healthcare professionals and scientists from the countries of the Eurasian region with the participation of the EAEU countries, SCO, ASEAN and BRICS for patients with orphan genetic diseases.

The main activities of the Eurasian Association of medical geneticists will be:

  • Establishing international scientific programmes for the diagnostics, clinical research and treatment of genetic orphan diseases and enabling specialists from different countries to send patients to get into
  • Developing international scientific programmes to exchange information on achievments in the diagnostics and treatment of orphan genetic diseases
  • Creation of international educational platforms for supplementary professional education, providing the opportunity for specialists to receive relevant knowledge and learn from experts recognized worldwide
  • Establishment of international telemedicine expert centres, participation in meetings between doctors and cross-consultations on medical genetic counselling, diagnostics and treatment of orphan diseases

Sergey Kutsev, President of the Association of medical geneticists of Russia, Director of the Research Centre for Medical Genetics, chief external expert in medical genetics of the Ministry of Healthcare of Russia, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences said: “The development of medical genetics today is impossible without international cooperation. Therefore, the Commonwealth without borders within the Eurasian Association of medical geneticists is our future and the future of our patients”.

Gulnara Svyatova, professor, Holder of an Advanced Doctorate in Medical Sciences, Chairman of the Association of medical geneticists of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Head of the Republican Medical Genetic Consultation «Scientific Centre of Obstetrics, Gynaecology and Perinatology», said: “The main goal of the Eurasian Association of medical geneticists will be to create a common system strategy of providing medical assistance to patients with orphan diseases to improve the quality of their life by promoting legislative initiatives, Introduction of rational genomic technologies for diagnosis, effective gene therapeutic treatment and individual rehabilitation. Also, state orders for the establishment of the national councils of experts in the EAEU countries and the inter-state expert council for the diagnostics and treatment of orphan diseases with the participation of lawyers and healthcare organizers for the subsequent development of effective Management decisions on timely diagnostics and provision of drug therapy. AEMG activities will be aimed at unification and development of interaction between patient, professional public organizations, charitable foundations, state structures of legislative and executive power to improve the quality of life of orphan patients in the EAEU countries”.

Tamara Sarkisyan, professor, Holder of an Advanced Doctorate in Medical Sciences, President of the Armenian Association of medical geneticists, Director of the Centre for Medical Genetics and Primary Health Protection, Head of the department of medical genetics of Yerevan State Medical University, said: “The association of the medical genetic community of the countries of the Association will ensure the exchange of experience of specialists in the field of clinical genetic diagnostics and treatment of orphan diseases. And the centralization of the most successful directions will be aimed at solving the most difficult problems of patients with rare diseases. Increased cooperation in the field of neonatal screening and the treatment of orphan diseases is desirable. In Armenia, neonatal screening is carried out for congenital hypothyroidism, phenylketonuria, congenital deafness, retinopathy of premature babies. Exchange of experience with countries where screening for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), cystic fibrosis, diagnostics of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, hereditary metabolic disorders is very important. Cooperation within the framework of the Eurasian Association will allow identification of priority researches compatible with national, genetic, historical and cultural peculiarities of our countries”.
