II Congress of Young Scientists in Sochi

From 1 to 3 December 2022, the II Congress of Young Scientists within the Decade of Science and Technology was held in the Science and Art Park «Sirius» in Sochi.

The Congress was organized by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia, the Coordinating council for youth affairs in the scientific and educational spheres of the Council under the President of the Russian Federation for science and education, the Fund «Roskongress», ANPO «National Priorities».

It was attended by about 3000 specialists from 77 regions of Russia and 40 countries - students and young scientists from Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, China, India, Myanmar, Egypt, Syria and others.

The participants met at expert discussions to discuss the global challenges facing science, technological solutions for domestic industry, agriculture, medicine and ecology and to get acquainted with the latest developments in science and technology.

In the section devoted to the achievements of genetics in perinatology and pediatrics, Natalia Semenova, the leading researcher of scientific advisory department at RCMG gave a report on the application of modern genetics in practical medicine.

In her speech, she stressed that if in the past it took years to develop a treatment of the disease to assemble a group of patients, to describe in detail the clinical symptoms, to study the pathogenesis of the disease, to choose different approaches to therapy, the process can now be carried out in a shorter time. This is facilitated by the development of modern technologies that allow basic science research and significant steps to be taken in understanding the pathogenetic mechanisms of not only frequent but also very rare diseases. Revealing the way in which genetic information is implemented from gene to symptom is the basic information for developing therapeutic approaches targeted to a particular link in the pathological process.

Natalia Semenova also noted that the understanding of doctors about the contribution of hereditary diseases to the structure of previously considered non-investigative diseases is changing and this leads to the expansion of indications for molecular genetic testing.

The experts of the section discussed various aspects of personalized medicine, as well as perspectives of the development of genetics in practical medicine.
