Methylation of genes encoding matrix metalloproteinases in surgical breast cancer samples was studied. Metalloproteinase genes are of interest due to the estimated probability of tumor metastases development.

Anomalous methylation of some metalloproteinase genes associated with HER2-positive breast cancer has been detected. The study showed that abnormal methylation of was tumor-specific and reflected the belonging of specific tumors to the hyper-methylated subtype of breast cancer.
