There are 18 scientific departments and 6 medical departments in the RCMG. The Center is developing new unique methods for the effective diagnosis of hereditary diseases using tandem mass spectrometry and massive parallel sequencing. New approaches to treat hereditary diseases with siRNA, antisense oligonucleotides and CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing technology are under investigation as well as new drugs, methods of diagnosis and personalized treatment approaches to cancer. Laboratory units have modern diagnostic equipment to provide various types of tests to diagnose hereditary diseases.
The Research Centre for Medical Genetics conducts fundamental, exploratory and clinical research aimed at obtaining new knowledge in the field of medical genetics.

- Investigation of structure, function and diversity of the genome and other human genetic material is general, in pathological condition and as a result of environmental adverse effects
- Creating models of human genetic disease using animals, cell cultures and bioinformatics methods
- Investigation of spread, etiology and pathogenesis of human hereditary diseases
- Development of new methods of diagnosis, prevention and treatment of human hereditary diseases
- Development of approaches to increase the effectiveness of genetic counseling
- Improving the organization of genetic consulting assistance to the population of Russia
