Ekaterina Y. Zakharova was born in 1971 in Moscow. She graduated from the Medical and Biological Faculty of the Russian State Medical University majored in biochemistry in 1994. In 1990, she was enrolled in the Hereditary Metabolic Diseases Laboratory at the Research Centre for Medical Genetics of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. She has combined studies at the institute and work in the laboratory for 4 years, doing research on collagens in hereditary diseases of the connective tissue. Having graduated from the institute in 1994, she got to independent research work on "Biochemical and molecular genetic diagnosis of mitochondrial diseases." In 1999, she underwent professional retraining at the Russian Medical Academy of Postgraduate Studies in "Laboratory Genetics". She defended her thesis "Elaboration of Differential diagnosis of mitochondrial diseases program" in 2001. Today, this area of research continues to be developed. She also participated in the development of screening analytical programs aimed at identification of hereditary metabolic diseases. In 2002, she participated in the Federal Targeted Scientific and Technical Program for Research and Development in Priority Areas of Development of Science and Technology on the topics: "Development of molecular bases of genomic and gene diagnostics" and "Technology of gene diagnostics and gene therapy"

During her work, she has mastered and introduced a large number of biochemical and molecular genetic methods into the practice of national medical genetic testing. 120 publications have been published in the course of her research work.

She has been the head of the Hereditary Metabolic Diseases Laboratory since 2002. She has supervised seven theses for candidate of science degree since 2003.
