E.V. Balanovska has been a head of the Human Population Genetics Laboratory established at FSBI RCMG since 2004. The Laboratory focuses on a gene-geographical analysis of the gene pool of peoples of Russia and neighboring countries, creation of databases on the world's population, elaboration of cartographic analyses of gene pools.

A field investigation of the gene pools of Russia’s populations was conducted under her leadership (with her direct participation in many regions), (Kalmykia, Tatarstan, Bashkortostan, Mordovia, Adygea, Kabardino-Balkaria, Karachay-Cherkessia, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Chechnya, Dagestan, the European part of Russia Ural, Western, Southern and Eastern Siberia, the Far East), as well as Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Afghanistan.

She was a Director of the North Eurasia Scientific Center of the largest international project Genograph (2005-2012). Her participation allowed to introduce the most complete, reliable and modern methods for DNA markers analysis. The unique databases on mtDNA and Y-chromosomes variability among the world's population created in the Laboratory, as well as the development of cartographic analysis technologies enabled the Laboratory to engage actively in global cooperation not only in the sections of DNA collections creation and their genotyping, but also in analytical sections. The creation of databases for a comprehensive study of the Russian gene pool and a diverse analysis thereof resulted in The Russian Gene Pool publication on the Russian Plain monograph.

She headed more than 25 projects: The National Geographic Society's International Project "The Genographic Project-1" (state registration number 0427/01/06, 2005-2011); the grants from the Russian Foundation of Basic Research and the Russian Humanitarian Scientific Foundation.
