The human gene geography subject means the variability of gene pool in space and time, the genetic history of humanity. A whole complex of sciences such as anthropology, archeology, linguistics, history, ethnology, paleogeography studies the history of humanity and we actively cooperate with leading representatives of these sciences. However, our focus is the human populations genetic history based on the analysis of modern and ancient DNA, the development of a fundamental problem of population formation and the analysis of genetic processes in modern and ancient human populations.

About the Laboratory

Our team obtained the priority results in theoretical population genetics and gene-geographical study of an extensive range of varied scope of gene pools: genus, ethnic subdivision, ethnicity, region, subcontinent, continent, and world.

The original gene geographic, cartographic, and statistical technology developed by us for the synthesis of multidimensional and interdisciplinary information about the gene pools has gained recognition in Russia and abroad. Our team has been the world’s only developer of global databases for both mtDNA and Y-chromosome and the leader in cartographic analysis of the gene pool for several years. The evidence maybe the fact that National Geographic, a world leader in production of cartographic products, chose our team to order a series of world maps with Y-chromosome and mitochondrial haplogroups distribution.

However, the cartographic analysis is only a small part of gene geography. Modern gene geography studies and compares the human genome polymorphism in different populations. How big is the similarity between different gene pools of populations of our planet? What are the genetic differences between geographically and historically different populations? How did this diversity developed? The search for answers to these questions determines the main areas of our work:

  • identification of gene pools key characteristics around the world and regionally;
  • identification of ancient migration flows and interconnections of the world's population;
  • history of formation of the spatial structure of Russia and world's population;
  • demographic history of regional populations;
  • creation of databases on the world's population for all major genetic systems (the Y-chromosome variants distribution, mtDNA, autosomal genome - wide genome, whole-exome, whole-genome data);
  • creation of software for the gene pools cartographic analysis;
  • creation of cartographic atlases of regional and world gene pools;
  • analysis of substrate and superstratum ratio in modern and ancient gene pools;
  • adaptation to changing environmental conditions;
  • interaction of cultures and interaction of gene pools;
  • reconstruction of historical migrations according to the genetic data;
  • general patterns in the geography of hereditary diseases.

The prestigious Russian and foreign scientific journals, including articles in such journals as Nature, Science, the American Journal of Human Genetics, and others published the outcomes of the research of our team; more than 150 publications have been published over the past 5 years.
